Chapter nineteen

Trent's eyes swept the entryway for the thirteenth time since sitting down. She still wasn't there, and he had doubts about whether she would show. Not true, he knew she would show, just to prove to him he had no control over anything that related to her. Knowledge that he possessed within seconds of meeting her last year. Where Julie was concerned, he was vastly out of his league, and his body was more out of control than a teenager given a stack of Playboy magazines.

He didn't know what he was doing anymore where she was concerned. After the bar bashfest, he thought it would be best to keep things professional. After all, they would have to work together every day, and the last thing he needed was the distraction of envisioning her naked every time he was in the office. Except, that's what was still happening even after they cleared the air and agreed to keep everything platonic.

Then Mr. Legman threw them a seventy-five mile per hour curveball about fraternization policies, or lack thereof, and everything he thought was firmly in place in his life was now twisted around. Why couldn't they see where this went? They were adults. Adults who were clearly attracted to each other and maybe that was all it was. Lust that needed to be purged from their systems.

Striding into her office yesterday, he thought the solution was simple, but she didn't take the offer. Didn't even consider the option. And that pissed him off. Why was she fighting this?

Tonight, he was going to change her mind. Remind her what it felt like when they were together. Convince her they didn't need to sit around waiting for the fire to die out. They could stoke the fire and let it burn hot until there were no embers remaining.

Speak of the devil. His eyes flitted to the entrance where she stood in a tight fitting blue shirt, even tighter jeans, and fuck me heels that he desperately wanted digging into his back. He watched her head tilt and take in the surrounding room, the twenty tables in the main area, the twenty-foot bar with four TVs playing sports channels behind the already packed bar, and then her jaw dropping open slightly as she glanced up at the small loft above.

Her eyes connected with his, and he saw the flash of heat before she squinted. She was angry with him, and that was ok, he could work with angry. Angry Julie turned him into a pyromaniac, a thought that should scare the shit out of him, but instead had him fixing his jeans.

She pulled out the seat next to him, but didn't acknowledge him. "Sorry I'm late. I had a showing that took way longer than needed."

Charlene looked up from her phone. "No problem."

Julie pulled out her lip gloss and kept her eyes focused on Charlene. "Is everything ok?"

"No," said Charlene as she tucked her phone back in her purse.

Trent shifted in his seat, uneasy that he hadn't noticed the lack of enthusiasm from Charlene when he took his seat.
